DEVELOPING CLASSROOM RULES AND ROUTINES

Everyone says that there are too many rules and regulations, and people should have the freedom to do what they want, but there are many reasons for rules and regulations to be applied. It is believed that if people are not controlled and rules and regulations are not there, then people will either by accident or on purpose will do things that are wrong so that they and other people around them suffer. Rules and regulations are there to make people behaviour in a respect and well controlled manner.

Why rules and routines?

  Classroom rules

Classroom rules are a set of rules and guidelines that are imposed by the teacher that the class must follow.  These rules are designed to assist the teacher in behaviour management and ensure there is a positive environment for learning where all pupils feel comfortable and safe.

General Principles for Developing Classroom Rules

         Rules are reasonable and necessary.

         Rules are clear and understandable.

Rules are consistent  with instructional goals and what is known about how people learn.

Classroom rules are consistent with school rules.

Classroom routine

"Routines are the backbone of daily classroom life. They facilitate teaching and learning…. Routines don’t just make your life easier, they save valuable classroom time. And what’s most important, efficient routines make it easier for students to learn and achieve more."

Why classroom routines?

The routine creates order and security strictly

The routine are predictable. So student do not get confused

Student are involved and do not have time to get bored

Students have confidence in the teacher because they see him as a well organize person.

There are more time for real learning because classroom management jobs do not take so long.

Establishing your Classroom Routines (procedures)

Classroom routines are procedures that are applied to specific situations or activities with the intention of getting them accomplished in an orderly manner, by coordinating student talk and movement.

For each situation/activity, you will need to: -

         determine the routines for it

communicate the routines to the students

teach the routines to the students

Importance of Establishing Routines

Rules should be kept to a minimum to allow students to remember them

Rules should contain language that is simple and appropriate to developmental level of the students and classroom

         Rules should be positively stated

Rule should be developed for various situations or contexts as needed (e.g. physical education class, field trips).

Maintaining appropriate student behavior

1. Actively in monitoring student behaviour

    ·         Develop "active eyes".

    ·         Walking among students.

2. Preventing is better than controlling

    ·         Enforce classroom rules promptly and consistently, from the very first day of school.

    ·         Make clear to students the consequences of

3. Reduce classroom disruption

    ·         Creating a conducive learning environment by removing distracting material.

Code of Conduct

A code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the responsibilities of, or proper practices for, an individual, institution or organisation. A code of conduct details the way that a person or employee should behave in order to uphold the code of ethics.

Importance of the code of Conduct

In schools the code of conduct is the standard of expected ethical behaivor for the students’, teachers and the other related staff. It is about holding oneself to the highest standards of ethical behaviour. Typically Codes talk about expectations to obey the law, conflicts of interest, preserving confidential information, bribery, corporate opportunities, competition and fair dealing/unbiased attitude among other things.

The school managers and teachers have the duty to create an environment conducive to ethical behaivor. This is sometimes called "tone at the top". A Code of Conduct is the cornerstone of setting the proper tone at the top for the school culture.

Some Ideas to Help You Organize Your Routines

Different people organize their routines differently and the ways they organize their work affect their learning. Some ideas related to better organization of the routines are presented in the following lines. Some people believe organizing routine will reduce creativity and spontaneity in the home and school.

Here's some information about establishing routines that may help to organize home or school.

1 Establish Routines

Establish a daily routine that helps to accomplish the major objectives you need to accomplish each day. Having a home or school schedule will allow you to accomplish these tasks quickly and easily, so you can relax and have fun without guilt.

2 Establish a Curfew

Curfews can sometimes be thrown to the wind during the summer months. But should try to reestablish curfew rules and enforce them a few weeks prior to the beginning of a new school year. Keep in mind your sleeping needs when determining a curfew, but be sure to make exceptions for special events or activities.

3 Write down the Schedule

Keeping organized means putting schedules in writing. Keep the calendar someplace visible to all, where children will see it every day. Run through the school routine with your child a few times before the start of the school year, explaining when he should get up, have breakfast, have his teeth brushed, have his lunched packed, meet the bus, etc. Review the calendar daily, making note of any last minute changes or daily appointments or commitments. It's also a good idea to go over the after school schedule.

4 Set Clothes out the Night Before

Always remember to set clothes and shoes out and ready a night before. That will prevent from running around the next morning looking for a certain shirt or socks etc that are clean.

5 Provide Homework Guidance

Homework can be a grisly obstacle during the early years, and many parents complain that their children just have too much homework to complete. Conquer homework challenges by helping the child to keep track of his homework assignments and by providing an environment that helps them to finish his/her school work responsibilities.
