Teaching as Profession

1.      What is teaching? IN education, teachers facilitate student learning, often in a school or academy or perhaps in another environment such as outdoors. A teacher who teaches on an individual basis may be described as a tutor.        2.      WHAT IS A PROFESSION? When most people talk about the professions, they are unknowingly using the ideas of two early sociological theories: trait models and structural-functionalism. Since the public continues to use these ideas long after sociologists have abandoned them, it is important that we take a moment to examine what these two theories say, and why they are wrong. Teaching as professions is divided into many areas of specializations, each requiring different skill-set and method of training.  2.1    Introduction  Since time immemorial, Teaching has been considered as one of the noblest professions. Teachers have always played the role of cata...

Micro-teaching

1. Introduction Why micro-teaching? Medical teachers most often do not receive a special training in pedagogic techniques, as it is usually not considered necessary for their recruitment or for an efficient continued performance. Their ability to teach therefore largely depends on self training, either by trial and error while teaching or by observation of colleagues, who may or may not be helpful examples. Getting in front of students is a trying experience for a budding teacher. One may earnestly try to prepare him or herself: read books about teaching methods, attend lectures and take courses on didactics. Yet, in theory everything seems much simpler than in practice. The complexity of a teaching situation can be overwhelming. To deal effectively with it, teachers must not only have a good knowledge of the subject in hand, but also some communication skills such as ability to observe, supervise, lead a discussion and pose questions. Furthermore, a teacher should be aware of h...

Quantitative and Qualitative Data

Some methods provide data which are quantitative and some methods data which are qualitative.  Quantitative methods are those which focus on numbers and frequencies rather than on meaning and experience. Quantitative methods (e.g. experiments, questionnaires and psychometric tests) provide information which is easy to analyse statistically and fairly reliable.  Quantitative methods are associated with the scientific and experimental approach and are criticized for not providing an in depth description. Qualitative methods are ways of collecting data which are concerned with describing meaning, rather than with drawing statistical inferences.  What qualitative methods (e.g. case studies and interviews) lose on reliability they gain in terms of validity.  They provide a more in depth and rich description. Quantitative methods have come under considerable criticism.  In modern research, most psychologists tend to adopt a combinat...

LEVELS OF PROJECT MANEGMENT T here are three variation to the project management life cycle. which cycle you use in a given project depend on what management need you are trying to meat. DEFINEING ,PLANNING ,ORGANIZING This first and simplest of the three cycles is concerned with getting the project going. We have encountered the number of situations in which one person will be solely responsible for completing all project activities. in such cases there is value in planning the project but limited value in implementing the control and close phases here the project manager and client are the same person  and interest is only lying out a strategy for doing the work. Often project falling this cycle will have to be planed  in conjunction with one or more other projects. DEFINEING ,PLANNING ,ORGANIZING CONTROLING. The second cycle is most often thought of an project management. Getting the project started is only half(ornately much less the...
